ISO 9001 was reviewed and re-issued late in 2008 without much fanfare and with minor changes that don't really impact all that much. The community of users consulted felt that the standard was still delivering and as such needed no major change.

The review of ISO 9004, the companion standard to ISO 9001 which details the continuous improvement aspect of the standard, went a lot further.

Where an organisation can be certified to ISO 9001, ISO 9004 provides no certification at all. Rather it provides the guidance to take already certified organisations forward with improvement in a number of areas that follow on from the basic certification.

In 2000, ISO 9004 was described as "Quality management systems - Guidelines for performance improvements".

The new ISO 9004 standard rider encourages "Managing for the sustained success of an organization - A quality management approach". Organisations now need to ensure that what they do contributes toward sustaining the organisation into the future successfully.
